From August 4 – 10, 2024, we celebrated National Health Center Week (NHCW), which honors the hard work of health centers across the country. HRSA’s Office of Intergovernmental and External Affairs (IEA) staff participated in events celebrating health centers in all 10 HRSA regions. IEA Regional Administrators (RA) and staff visited 90 health centers in 35 states and territories, where they celebrated the incredible work of health centers providing care in underserved communities. During the visits, HRSA staff met with health center staff, leaders, and patients, and congratulated new FY24 Accelerating Cancer Screening (AxCS) award recipients. Additionally, HRSA and health center employees participated in health fairs, shared moments for staff appreciation, and enjoyed other community events to commemorate the week.

During the visit, the health center gifted seedlings to the community and local farmers showcased their fresh produce.

The visits highlighted Community Health Center of the New River Valley's Office-Based Addiction Treatment program and approach to integrated behavioral health services.
Three Lower Counties (dba Chesapeake Health Care) (Salisbury, MD)
IEA’s Chris Woolslayer visited Three Lower Counties Community Health Services’ Salisbury, MD location, which is a HRSA Quality Improvement Fund-Maternal Health awardee. They have used this funding to improve maternal health outcomes along the Eastern Shore of Maryland through their accredited Centering Pregnancy Program, new ultrasound equipment, and recruiting a new Maternal Fetal Medicine OBGYN.

Tri-Area Community Health Center (Floyd, VA and Ferrum, VA)
IEA’s RA Leah Suter visited multiple sites of Tri-Area Community Health, where they highlighted their efforts to provide care to communities across a 2,500 square mile service area in rural southwestern Virginia. After a tour of the site in Floyd, Suter joined a community fair at their site in Ferrum, VA.
Eastern Shore Rural Health (Onley, VA)
IEA's Chris Woolslayer toured Onley Community Health Center in Onley, VA, which is part of the Eastern Shore Rural Health network of FQHCs. The health center also held a community event with several partners and resources, including insurance companies, resources on domestic violence support, the local library’s bookmobile, and the Tooth Fairy. The Eastern Shore Rural Health is also home to the only urgent care on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, which is managed by the health center and opened in May 2023.
La Red Health Center (Georgetown, DE)
IEA’s Chris Woolslayer visited La Red Health Center in Georgetown, DE to tour the health center and meet with health center leadership. The health center has a new mobile unit which will be the only one in Delaware to offer primary care visits. The health center hopes to reach more patients in rural areas of the state.

IEA’s Abjot Kaur visited DAP Health in Palm Springs, CA to tour the clinic with leadership. DAP serves 80,000 patients across 35 delivery sites which include medical, dental, mental health, substance use disorder, and enabling services.
Northern Nevada HOPES (Reno, NV)
IEA’s RA Valerie Gallo visited Northern Nevada HOPES’ Jerry Smith Community Wellness Center, their newest location which opened in June 2024. This 43,000-square-foot facility will expand primary medical care, behavioral health care, and substance use treatment, providing much-needed services to the most underserved members of Reno and Washoe Counties.

United Health Centers of San Joaquin Valley, Fowler Community Health Center (Fresno, CA)
IEA’s Sara Minnich met with United Health Centers of the San Joaquin Valley, one of the largest federally qualified health centers in the state, serving almost 1 million patients in the past year across 31 sites in the Central Valley. Fowler Community Health Center, opened in January 2024, was built from the ground up with HRSA capital expansion funding.
Valley Health Team, Kerman Community Health Center, and Kerman Unified School District Community Health Center (Kerman, CA)
IEA’s Sara Minnich traveled to Kerman, CA to visit two Valley Health Team sites: Kerman Community Health Center and Kerman Unified School District Community Health Center to celebrate Patient Appreciation Day with gifts for patients, including special giveaways for farmworkers such as water, hydration packets, cooling towels, and information to avoid heat exhaustion and related illnesses. Their Kerman school-based health center, adjacent to a nearby elementary school, was the first in the county and the model for the establishment of many other school-based health centers.

Open Door Community Health Centers (Arcata, CA)
IEA’s Deputy RA Gabriele (Brie) Colangelo visited Open Door Community Health Clinic in Arcata, CA to meet with health center leadership and staff and tour their new clinic that now replaces their two existing Arcata clinics — Humboldt Open Door Clinic and North Country Clinic. The clinic's pod design promotes an integrative health care team and positive patient experience and will allow Open Door to increase their annual patient capacity to 44,000.

Terry Reilly Health Services (Middleton, Idaho)
IEA’s Cheryl Altice attended the grand opening of Terry Reilly Health Services – Middleton Clinic’s pharmacy. The new pharmacy will expand access to low-cost medication, chronic disease management, and Medication Assistance Program across Idaho’s Treasure Valley area and Terry Reilly’s 26 health center clinics, and is the second pharmacy in Middleton, Idaho.
Full Circle Health (Caldwell, ID)
IEA’s Cheryl Altice visited Full Circle Health’s newest clinic in Caldwell, ID for Patient Appreciation Day. Full Circle serves Idahoans across its 9 clinics, four family medicine residency programs, and five fellowships.
Native American Rehabilitation Association (Portland, OR)
IEA’s Gloria Laryea visited the Native American Rehabilitation Association (NARA) in Portland, OR to tour the health center's wellness center, dental clinic, and outpatient behavioral health facility. On the tour, Dr. Heather Reppeto, NARA Chief Health & Wellness Officer, highlighted NARA’s care coordination work to provide culturally appropriate and quality holistic care to the communities they serve, including America Indians and Alaska Native.
Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center (McMinnville, OR)
IEA’s Gloria Laryea attended the Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center Health Fair in McMinnville, OR, where over 100 community members connected with local organizations providing resources on housing, jobs, and immigration. The fair also featured the health center’s mobile health clinic offering health services to attendees.

Multnomah County and Wallace Together in Health Community Health Centers (Portland, OR)
IEA’s Gloria Laryea joined Multnomah County and Wallace Together in Health Community Health Centers at their collaborative Back-to-School Health Fair where they provided resources such as backpacks, health checkups, haircuts, food, and school supplies to students. Multnomah County Health Center provided onsite health services in their mobile medical unit, and Wallace Medical Concern provided tours of their nearby clinic and student health mobile clinic.

Neighborcare Health (Seattle, WA)
IEA’s Anna Nguyen and Nathan Drozd joined Neighborcare Health leadership for Staff Appreciation Day at their Columbia City and Pacific Tower dental sites. HRSA staff learned about Neighborcare Health’s Center of Excellence Applied Behavior Analysis, Dental Education Clinic, and other ways they are providing integrated care services.
HealthPoint (Auburn, WA)
IEA’s Gloria Andia and Nathan Drozd joined HealthPoint Auburn at the Ray of Hope Shelter for their Healthcare for the Homeless event, where HealthPoint provided meals, health care services, and hygiene supplies. HRSA staff learned about HealthPoint’s work providing integrated care to their community and people experiencing homelessness and connected with HRSA-supported National Health Service Corps recipients.
